Calgary’s Red Mile is a hot spot for everything from coffee, to date nights and evenings out. Despite the popularity however, the construction on 17th Avenue has taken a real toll on local shops, restaurants, cafés, and bars. In the last few years, there have been new businesses opening replacing a number of businesses who have closed their doors, and now Calgarians can’t help but blame stand-still road closures and construction for putting a cap on potential.
Local business owners from Philosafy Coffee and Buttermilk Fine Waffles have spoken out regarding their experiences since the road construction started; noting sales at Philosafy dropped 50% during the first two weeks of construction.
With obstacles on top of obstacles for local businesses in Calgary, many believe construction shouldn’t be one of them and are frustrated. But will the ends eventually justify the means?
Calgary developer Frank Lonardelli, CEO of Arlington Street Investment must reckon they will. Arlington has purchased 42 buildings along 17th Avenue in an ambitious attempt to revamp the street’s face.
